One of the advantages of a franchise is their previously developed systems of operations. Therefore, an attractive feature of most franchises is that they have a proven system of operation. This system has been developed and refined by the franchisor. A franchisor with many franchisees will typically have a highly refined system based on the entire experience of all these operations.
Questions to ask about franchise systems
When exploring franchises, consider how the franchise systems are set up. Ask if the systems are easy to follow. Will your team clearly understand the systems and follow them? How much assistance does the franchisor provide? Do they offer a mentor or someone to assist in the day-to-day during and after you open for business?
Be sure to ask the franchisor, as well as, the franchisees these questions before signing the agreement. You may get two different answers to your questions!
Other questions to consider are: how long has the franchise been in operation? Are the systems continually being refined or have they remained the same for several years? How strict is the franchisor in following their systems? Newer franchisors (emerging brands) may be more lax in their requirements because they have not been refined yet. While a franchisor that has been in business a long time expects you to follow their systems to a tee, because they know if you follow their systems, you should be more successful.
